Public schools constantly pit individual student rights versus what school administrators deem appropriate. In most cases, when the issue ends up in court, the decision is usually made in the school's favor. After all, matters of good decorum and order generally come before the right of self expression. But, what if the issue isn't a matter of self expression, but rather religious or cultural tradition? Should the school system have the right to trump what a parent says is good and appropriate cultural observance? Thus we come to the case of the Texas school district versus the Apache kid's hair.

We Don't Need No Stinking Islam 101

One of the jobs of a school administrator is to try to keep the peace in school. If episodes occur where tempers flare and violence erupts, many administrators will see these as "teaching moments." But, this is the 21st century and some claim we suffer from Islamophobia. Thus, any teaching moment involving exposing kids to the facts about Islam is likely to not deliver the intended message. Such is the case at Friendswood Middle School near Houston, where an administrator thought an act of violence could be used as a teaching moment. Unfortunately for the administrator involved, the lesson learned was very painful as it involved her losing her job.

Anjali Datta is one smart young lady. The 16-year-old from Grapevine, Texas is smart enough to have aced the ACT. She's smart enough to have clearly established herself as the top student in her graduating class. She's so smart she's managed to graduate a year early from Grapevine High School (GHS). Unfortunately, it looks like she outsmarted herself from being class valedictorian.

For The Sake Of The Children.

It all began as a search for a missing 16-year-old girl, allegedly a victim of sexual and physical abuse, at the ranch owned by a polygamist sect near San Angelo, Texas.  It soon developed into one of the largest child rescue operations conducted in the US with 462 children removed and separated from their mothers.  Texas state authorities said the conditions at the ranch were so horrific that there was no choice but to step in and separate the kids from their mothers.  Texas is moving out smartly to place all the children in foster homes.  But, it's a move which some have been decrying as cruel, not the least the mothers. It's also one some people are calling a "class-action child removal" leading to questions whether Texas authorities overplayed their hands.
