Some claim that strong fences make good neighbors. As you read this work continues apace to build a good fence system to separate the US from Mexico. Whether that will make for better neighbors is moot but as work progresses in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas a question does arise - can it possibly be completed without hiring those it's intended to keep out?

As the MPs (PDF), the FBI, and various talking heads chase the accused murderer of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, a new angle in the case may block the thirst for blood. The suspect is believed to have fled the country to Mexico, a nation which is among a growing list that refuse to extradite suspects back to face the death penalty.

Whilst the major and minor combatants are out in the hinterlands, showing up at various campaign appearances and candidate debates, the time is ripe to ask ourselves a mystery of life type question from the political bin. No, it won't require you to engage in any Hillary or Bush bashing (although that will likely follow). It's the type of question anyone can weigh in and have an opinion on regardless of your political affiliation. I've often heard a saying I always thought was rather trite yet, for some people, it truly resonates - "if you don't vote, you have no right to complain." Is this valid?

A study that was recently released in the UK under the direction of David Nutt, has called for a new framework for classifying drugs - a framework that classifies drugs based on "their actual risks to society" which would include adding alcohol and tobacco to the list of drugs needing regulated.
According to existing British drug policy, alcohol and tobacco are legal, while cannabis and ecstasy are illegal. "The current drug system is ill thought- out and arbitrary," said Nutt, referring to the practice of assigning drugs to three divisions, ostensibly based on the drugs' potential for harm.
Tobacco causes 40 percent of all hospital illnesses, while alcohol is blamed for more than half of all visits to hospital emergency rooms. The substances also harm society in other ways, damaging families and occupying police services.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair was the first to think the heretofore unthinkable - involve Iran as part of the solution to Iraq, rather than a part of the problem of the region. Was Blair trying a Nobel Prize move or just an attempt to make it easier for his successor to operate on the world stage? Who knows, but when one of the most solid of George Bush's partners in Iraq shows a little bit of independence from the official line of "we'll leave when the job is done" it's got to raise some eyebrows.
