One consequence of the swine flu epidemic (or mania -- take your choice) is that employers are telling workers to not even bother coming into work if they are sick. During these trying times, it just makes good sense to keep sick workers away from the work place. After all, how much work can a desperately ill person do? And how many healthy people can an ill person infect? Sounds good from a public health policy standpoint. It's a bit less of a good thing for those millions of workers whose employers don't allow sick leave. If they are struggling to get by, paycheck to paycheck, a four or five day unpaid leave could be critical. Never fear, the federal government is riding to the rescue.

Look at it as a battle between progress and heritage. Or, look at it as a battle between capitalism and conservation. Or, just look at it as a battle between jobs and no jobs. Those are some of the perspectives as Wal-Mart lines up against historical and conservationist geeks over a patch of turf in rural Virginia.

The practice of handing out gift cards and cash to strangers is known as being a Secret Santa. The practice began when a person named Larry Stewart felt the need to pay back an act of kindness he received from a stranger. Over the years, Secret Santas have sprung up all over, doling out cash and gifts large and small. When many people read about Secret Santas and their activities, they get a nice rosy feeling and say to themselves, "that is so in the spirit of the season." Then there's the world's largest retailer with always low prices and unblocked vestibules.

If you're a TV viewer who isn't hooked up to cable or satellite services, you might be in for a big surprise on February 19th of next year. That's the magic date when television broadcasters will stop sending analog signals. Therefore, if you're picking up your transmission through your own house antenna or rabbit ears on an old analog box, you won't be seeing anything after February 19th. Unless, of course you have a new box with a digital tuner in it or you're a cable or satellite customer (they're doing all the conversion work for you). This is not a date which has been creeping up on us unannounced. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has been letting the public know of the upcoming transition for years.

I can't make up my mind - super healthy or super cheap? I love Mung bean sprouts, and have some growing in the kitchen almost every day (I've got three sprouters). On the other hand, I still like some processed food, like Green Giant veggies in cheese sauce.

Wal-Mart now faces the largest class action lawsuit ever to be filed against a business in the United States. In a 2-1 decision, the San Francisco appeals court has ruled that there is enough evidence for the pay discrimination case, in which the claimants argue Wal-Mart has systematically pursued a policy of paying women lower wages, to move forward.

Since most Wal-Mart stores offer free overnighting priveleges for recreational vehicles in their parking lots, what could be more natural than that Ma and Pa America would travel across the United States, stopping at Wal-Marts along the way? What could be more natural than that a slightly tech-savvy Ma and Pa America might blog about their adventures? What could be more natural than the tales and pictures of all the smiling Wal-Mart employees they meet along the way? Until recently, Walmartingacrossamerica was that very blog, until critics discovered certain very unnatural pieces of evidence.

On August 23, a hearing will be held to determine whether a temporary restraining order should be granted to stop "improper communications" from Wal-Mart. These alleged communications have been described as "borderlin[ing] on criminal witness intimidation," which is supposedly being carried out by local store managers.
