People in Kansas have been trying for some time to stop Dr. George Tiller from doing what he does best. They've tried to legislate him out of business, without luck. They've tried to find sympathetic prosecutors to charge him with a crime - likewise without luck. They've even shot him twice, but only winged him in the arm.

A recently concluded Norwegian study has determined that premature babies are significantly more likely than their full term brethren to develop health complications later in life. They were substantially more likely to die during later childhood, and also were much more frequently found to be infertile when they later tried to have children themselves.

The abortion debate continues. Only this time, it's not about a state trying to criminalize abortions or make it impossible for women to receive abortions. It's not even about an attempt to sanction doctors for performing abortions. This time, it's about an attempt to stop doctors, who might have moral reservations about performing abortions themselves, from referring patients to doctors who would perform the operation.

The S.T.A.Y. program at the Manchester, New Hampshire YMCA has been around for close to 20 years. Working in concert with local schools, it is aimed at helping 7th and 8th grade students to "reengage in school and learning, build social skills and reduce the use of alcohol and other drugs by providing support, tutoring, adventure education, and family outreach." One of the ways they accomplish those goals is to load the kids aboard busses and take them around the community to see what government and social agencies are doing. This good idea may have suffered from poor execution recently as a field trip included a visit to a controversial social agency costing one YMCA official her job and bringing the program under fire.

The numbers tell us that around 25,000 pregnancies will end in stillbirths in the US. For most of the parents who must accept that life's lottery dealt them a dead fetus to bury, the feelings of frustration and loss are palpable. Because, up until recently, the only memorial they have to the life lost is a death certificate for the fetus. There is a move afoot to change that with the law in some states saying that a birth (of sorts) did occur. But, there is a controversy brewing over this. Because, where some view it as recognition of the stillborn fetus as more than a lifeless fetus, providing a bit of comfort to grieving parents, is seen by others as a backdoor attack on abortion rights.

Okay, you just found out you're having a baby. The very next thing you want to do is find out whether it's a boy or a girl because you just can't start too early deciding what color to paint the nursery, right? Well, that's one of the main reasons being put forth by DNA Worldwide, the company marketing their Pink or Blue DNA test kits. At a cost of between (UK)£190 and £240 (dependent upon how fast you want your results mailed to you) the test does seem to be a bit expensive just so you can get an early jump on what color the baby's room is going to be. In addition to that consideration, there seems to be some some concern over whether the test actually works.

If you go to an expert for advice, you can generally rely upon getting all the information you need to make a decision. But, if you go to a doctor, you might not get that sort of treatment. According to a major study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a disturbing number of doctors feel there are topics they can discuss and those they can't. The line separating what they'll discuss with a patient happens to be that doctor's personal moral code. In some instances, if the issue the patient most needs to know about is one their doctor believes conflicts with his or her moral code, they might not even be referred to a doctor qualified to perform it.

A `Very Dire' Time For Women

To feminist icon Eleanor Smeal this year looks like it might be a watershed for women's right to choose what happens to their bodies. Whether you call it abortion rights or the right to choose, much hangs in the balance this year. Access to abortions is being curtailed in many states (here's a web site with a comprehensive listing of all abortion clinics in the US), either through pressure to shut down clinics or enactment of laws requiring parental or spousal consent. The US Supreme Court is in transition with many activists worried that Roe v. Wade itself might be overturned. More to the point and, just over the horizon, voters in South Dakota will decide whether abortion will be outlawed entirely on November 7th. What to do was the question on the minds of many activists. The answer, they believe, is to put women's names back on the issue and to fight back at the polls.
