Should Obama Focus on Osama?

During the campaign, and particularly during the debates, then presidential candidate Barack Obama repeatedly focused on one of the biggest apparent failures of the Bush administration - its inability to capture the leader of Al-Qaeda, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (as well as numerous other attacks around the world), Osama bin Laden - and argued that if he was elected that he would work with laser-like focus to bring him to justice.

The Bush Administration's `No Knock' Policy

Remember those cross border raids US Special Forces troops pulled off in Pakistan recently?  The good news is they reportedly bagged some bad guys.  The bad news is they might have also killed some innocent people and managed to piss the Pakistanis off more than a bit.  The significant thing is they they ushered in another new wrinkle in the War on Terror.  According to Pentagon sources, the Bush administration has quietly implemented a new policy in going after Taliban and al-Qaeda types who camp out on the Pakistan side of the border with Afghanistan.  That new policy involves sending in troops without bothering to ask permission from our friends and allies in Islamabad.

Why Did Iraq Violence Fall?

During the summer of 2007, attacks on U.S. forces fell from a high of 1,550 a week to below 800 a week, and civilian fell approximately 75 percent during 2007.  Conventional Washington wisdom is that the surge of troops into Iraq and associated changes in military strategy caused this fall in violence, although others point to the Anbar Awakening.  Bob Woodward's new book raises a mysterious third explanation: "a series of top-secret operations" that allowed U.S. Special Forces to "locate, target and kill key individuals."

A much hyped recent video by terrorist Osama bin-Laden does not actually contain any threats and is a rambling statement released for the 6 year anniversary of 9/11.
