Try saying that headline five times fast!

Well, like it or not, summer is creeping up on us fast.

To me, that means beer!  The brandy, scotch, wine, bourbon, and so on that we warmed our bellies up with all winter long are going back on the shelf.

Jesse Drews died last month on his 21st birthday. Not from a heartbreaking disease that took from us a young man in his prime, but from alcohol poisoning. Mr. Drews was participating in a trend, drinking 21 shots of alcohol a 21st birthday.

Just about everyone likes to mellow out with an alcoholic beverage from time-to-time.  There are just so many and life is too short.

Wine has always been popular and a very good accompaniment to a meal, but there are many other options.

I spent a good portion of my Friday evening at a fund raiser at some banquet hall. You know, the ones everybody gets guilted into going to, or possibly for the open bar serving only wine in a plastic cup or Canadian beer by the pitcher. The good thing is the evening allowed for lengthy introspection after which I realized a 3rd party candidate has little to no shot in this country for the foreseeable future.

Every spring, like clockwork, thousands of high school students in the United States prepare to attend the prom. A good time, full of life changing experiences, is usually had by all, though there are times when it leads to trouble. Many school districts usually attempt to dissuade teens from letting the prom experience become deadly with graphic depictions of what happens when good proms go bad. However, one school district has turned the tables on who gets to sit through pre-prom education sessions by requiring all parents to go.

A study that was recently released in the UK under the direction of David Nutt, has called for a new framework for classifying drugs - a framework that classifies drugs based on "their actual risks to society" which would include adding alcohol and tobacco to the list of drugs needing regulated.

According to existing British drug policy, alcohol and tobacco are legal, while cannabis and ecstasy are illegal. "The current drug system is ill thought- out and arbitrary," said Nutt, referring to the practice of assigning drugs to three divisions, ostensibly based on the drugs' potential for harm. Tobacco causes 40 percent of all hospital illnesses, while alcohol is blamed for more than half of all visits to hospital emergency rooms. The substances also harm society in other ways, damaging families and occupying police services.
