It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got Death's Sting

From bungee jumping to all sorts of extreme sports -- people do crazy things because the thrill achieved by risking one's life makes the experience worth it.  Would the experience still be worth it if the risk were removed?  Is it even the same experience? These questions are being raised in Japan by a group of merchants involved in the fugu trade.  Put quite plainly, if you eat a dish of fugu or puffer fish which hasn't been prepared properly, you can die.  But now they're selling non-poisonous fugu.  The merchants involved in selling the toxic versions are upset at the potential loss of business.  They also pose the question of whether living a risk-free life is a life at all.

If you have ever had a dispute with a credit card company or bank over money you probably think you can take your case to court and gain satisfaction. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.

What's Good For Toyota Is Good For The Country, And Vice Versa

Preliminary reports suggest that this year, for the first time, Toyota's worldwide sales will top that of US automaker General Motors, prompting our own tomc to offer up our headline by reinterpreting Charles Wilson's oft-quoted phrase "What’s good for the country is good for General Motors, and vice versa" (which some believe to be true), to include Toyota in place of GM.

Let's Have A Rebate Debate

Most of us have been there.  You went out and purchased your wireless, Hi-Def, digital Ramalaminator and paid (US)$250 for it.  But wait, if you match up the receipts with the bar code, fill out the paperwork and mail it into Ramalaminator Inc. within the next two weeks, you'll get $100 back in a rebate!  Sounds like a deal, so you buy the thing with the best of intentions of taking advantage of the manufacturer's largesse.  But there's a dark side to the bright prospect of getting money back, of course - dissatisfiers like lost receipts, taking too long to claim a rebate, the glacial pace of the postal system, glitches in the rebate process, even dishonesty on the part of the manufacturer.  All these things add up to a feeling that rebates aren't really worth what retailers make them out to be.  They also leave the buying public with questions of why can't manufacturers just drop the prices on the stuff they sell and save us all from rebate hell?

Our Advertising, Not Our Prices, Is Insane!

The now defunct New York area electonics superstore Crazy Eddie used to feature a spokesperson whose tagline was "our prices are insane!"  Although much beloved by listeners at the time, the advertising caught criticism from groups who believed mental illness was no laughing matter.  One would think that it would be a long time before someone came up with an ad campaign as automatically tasteless as Crazy Eddie.  But that time has come and allow me to introduce you to a surefire nominee for inclusion at any future advertising Hall of Shame -- Dennis Mitsubishi of Columbus, Ohio and it's dead on arrival "Jihad on the US automotive market" campaign.
