The outlook for 12-year-old Motl Brody was always fairly grim.  Diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor earlier this year, his parents took him to a hospital in Washington, DC for what was seemingly a long shot operation.  As it turned out, it was just that as the surgery to save him put him in a coma.  The doctors say there's nothing more that can be done for him medically.  Brody's parents disagree, saying their religious beliefs dictate as long as Motl's heart keeps beating, he's alive.  Both sides are hopelessly deadlocked and they now turn to a court to decide whether Motl is dead or alive.

We've all heard of the phrase "giving of yourself for others." Stacey Fearnall is a person who lives by that credo. She believes in it so much the 36-year-old from Owen Sound, Ontario offered to shave her head in return for pledges to a local cancer charity. People pledged (CN)$2,700 and Stacey took the razor to her "long red locks." Then she showed up for work at Nathaniel's restaurant thinking she had done a good deed. If she was expecting to be congratulated for doing a bit for charity, she's disappointed. Stacey was told to leave work and not return for the rest of the summer.

The recent development of Gardasil was hailed as a major development in the fight against cervical cancer. However, recent evidence suggests that the virus causing cervical cancer is much more rampant in another anatomical site. It turns out that in one study almost 3 out of 4 women were anally infected with HPV.

The American Society for Clinical Oncology is preparing new guidelines for treatment which will, for the first time, include a discussion of cost considerations for advanced treatment options. The lack of universal health care in the US, combined with skyrocketing costs, has pushed this issue to the forefront for patients facing a terminal cancer diagnosis.

Consider tale of Skip Legault, poster boy for New York's anti-smoking posters and commercials. Since he started smoking at age 8, he has had two heart attacks, strokes, surgeries, and at least seven blood clots, one of which caused gangrene and amputation of his right lower leg.

There are bad bosses and then there are world class bad bosses.  Your garden variety bad boss might have you run personal errands for him or her or take all the credit for your hard work or stiff you on overtime.  But a world class bad boss will fire you right before Christmas because you've been off work with cancer.  A real life example of such a world class bad boss is Florida Fourth Circuit Court Judge Aaron Bowden.

US blacks receive inferior cancer treatment compared to whites. Disparities in treatment first documented in 1992 have continued despite all efforts to erase them. Researchers studied treatments for cancer given to more than 143,000 Americans over age 65 from 1992 to 2002 under Medicare, and their findings were published by American Cancer Society.
