I originally wasn't going to write this up as my bile rises everytime I see or hear the name Danieal Kelly. Not that Kelly was a bad person; she was a 14-year-old kid who had the bad luck to be born with cerebral palsy and a pair of bottom feeders for parents. Danieal is beyond anyone's help now and, apparently, was beneath the concern of anyone who should have given a shit about her while she was alive. She died two years ago, starved to death in a home where her mother oversaw her "care." She died as a city agency, which is charged with protecting people like Danieal, looked the other way and falsified records that she was receiving sufficient family care. Danieal Kelly didn't have to die, but she did, and it should worry everyone who reads about her.

Some psychics claim they have the power to gather information they normally wouldn't have access to, see into the future and read your mind or transmit information by the power of thought. They even claim they can help police solve crimes. For most of us psychic powers seem either fantastic or weirdly interesting and amusing, yet ultimately harmless. But, according to Colleen Leduc of Barrie, Ontario her encounter with a psychic was anything but amusing.

Laurie Williamson presented herself as a totally involved, concerned mother whose kids had medical problems. Over a ten year period, she took her kids from one doctor to the next, pointing out a variety of physical maladies she said the children were suffering. The children, ages 8, 11 and 13 now, showed symptoms of the afflictions that Williamson told the doctors the children were suffering. The doctors responded by ordering medical treatments and, sometimes surgeries, to treat them. As it turned out, it was all a lie as Laurie Williamson made up the medical maladies, coached the children to act like they were really ill, and collected a whole bunch of money from the state and people who bought into her tales of woe. All that is at an end as the 40-year-old Spring, Texas woman is facing the next 15 years behind bars.

For The Sake Of The Children.

It all began as a search for a missing 16-year-old girl, allegedly a victim of sexual and physical abuse, at the ranch owned by a polygamist sect near San Angelo, Texas. It soon developed into one of the largest child rescue operations conducted in the US with 462 children removed and separated from their mothers. Texas state authorities said the conditions at the ranch were so horrific that there was no choice but to step in and separate the kids from their mothers. Texas is moving out smartly to place all the children in foster homes. But, it's a move which some have been decrying as cruel, not the least the mothers. It's also one some people are calling a "class-action child removal" leading to questions whether Texas authorities overplayed their hands.

You Had Your Day In Court. You Were Acquitted. Too Bad - You're Still a Sex Offender.

When James D. Frank was cleared of criminal charges, he must have thought his problems were over. However, in Pennsylvania being acquitted in court doesn't necessarily let you off the hook - especially if the charges involve sexual abuse of a child. You see, Pennsylvania holds to two standards of innocence. There is the standard he met in criminal court by clearing his name "beyond a reasonable doubt." Then there is the standard he failed to meet in the eyes of the Department of Public Welfare (DPW). Although Frank doesn't have a conviction on his record, he is included on the department's child abuse registry and may remain on it for another six years.

Should Raising An Obese Child Be A Crime?

The answer to that question is a resounding yes for some social workers and doctors in the United Kingdom. There has been an increasing trend in the UK to treat obese children in the same fashion as children reported to be at risk from physical or sexual abuse. Beyond merely insuring that parents have to work together with national health authorities to deal with cases of obese children, there are some who believe allowing a child to become obese should bring criminal charges.
