We Gather To Celebrate God's Bounty Without Demeaning Costumes.

For at least 40 years, two schools in Claremont, California celebrated Thanksgiving by acting out the myth of the first American Thanksgiving.  This would involve groups of students and faculty wearing either Pilgrim garb or Indian costumes.  They would then gather to simulate that first feast which celebrated the Pilgrims' surviving that first year at Plymouth Colony.  But, this is the age of political correctness, and even kindergartners must bow down before the revised version of history.

Are The Brits About To Impose The Tyranny Of The Tots?

The Labor government in Britain is committed to achieving "world class skills" in the UK by 2020 and they believe this begins in the schools.  Thus, both the House of Commons and the House of Lords are in the final process of drafting a piece of legislation which will play a key role in achieving that stated goal.  A central piece of the proposed legislation is aimed at giving school kids a greater voice in their schools.  But some critics say, rather than giving them a greater voice, the bill's net effect would be to "lunatics taking over the asylum."

Semaj Booker's actions have been described as "outrageous."  The 11-year-old Tacoma kid from a troubled home had been involved in a car theft and two successful attempts to smuggle himself aboard plane flights to Texas.  Then he tried to sneak aboard another flight out of Sea-Tac airport and a judge warned him, if he didn't begin taking a step in the right direction, there would be consequences.  This week, Booker learned what those consequences would be - at least one of his "outrageous" actions is now officially a felony, a charge which might stick with him the rest of his life.

Leave No Child Behind (But Leave Most Of Them Unbuckled On The School Bus)

Seatbelt use is a legal requirement for occupants of motor vehicles throughout the US.  At least it is unless those occupants are school children loaded aboard school buses.  Many people have taken note of this odd situation and asked why?  Why, indeed do we allow vehicles packed with school children to operate without some sort of restraint system in place to protect them in case of an accident?  Only five states (California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey and New York) have laws requiring seat belt use on school buses, with Texas going to require it in 2010.  The federal Department of Transportation announced its final plan to change things by requiring that children aboard school buses must wear lap and shoulder belts - but the rule only applies to smaller school buses.

Forget About Santa And The Cute, Cuddly Polar Bears Won't You? Coke Doesn't Target Kids!

If you look at the ingredients in Coca Cola and try to figure out the nutritional value of the soda, you should come to the conclusion that Coke is not a health food.  For children, especially, Coke is hardly a good, healthy substitute for beverages like milk, juice or water.  But that's not the message the Coca Cola Company is trying to impart in a series of print ads in Canadian publications.  The ads state: "Can't remember the last Coca Cola ad targeted at children.  There's a reason."  The reason, according to the soft drink giant is that they have never targeted children with their ads.  But, one Canadian doctor who saw this ad in a medical journal stopped and essentially said to himself "WTF you mean you don't market to kids?"

Depending on your basic point of view there are two ways of looking at what happened this past weekend in Westfield, Massachusetts.  Someone died at the Westfield Sportsman's Club (site currently suspended) while firing an automatic weapon.  Either a terrible accident occurred or it was the predictable outcome of putting deadly weapons in the hands of those who shouldn't handle them.  According to club officials, everything was under control and the shooter was accompanied to the firing line by a licensed instructor.  But, the unfortunate outcome was that an eight-year-old boy is dead and everyone wants to know why.

This Is Not The Way Things Were Supposed To Work

Since 1999, states have enacted Safe Haven laws as measures to help protect the most vulnerable among us.  For the most part, the laws allow parents or guardians, to surrender children they are responsible for with the state.  They are intended to remove younger children (you might say babies) from threatening environments and not punish the surrendering custodian.  Most of the laws are quite strictly worded, along those lines.  Nebraska apparently is not one of these as, within a few months of enactment of that state's Safe Haven law, two older children have been surrendered under the Safe Haven law - inappropriately in the minds of many Nebraskans.

Reports that cell phone usage increases the likelihood of brain cancer have been out for some time now. The main culprit is seen as the electromagnetic radiation (ER) emitted by the devices. For the most part, the industry and the federal government seem to agree that cell phone usage is perfectly safe. They've been backed up by study upon study which says so. However, there's at least one expert in the field who is warning maybe you should think twice about using them, just to be on the safe side.

You're Never Too Young To Be A Racist.

"Racism is not born in you; it happens after you're born" is the opening lyric of the song "You Have To Be Carefully Taught" from the Broadway musical South Pacific.  Point being that there is no such thing as a born racist, just babies born into a world filled with parents, teachers and significant others who shape, mold and impose their racist views on these children as they grow older.  But, how does it begin and what can be done to combat it?  If you wait too long to counter racist beliefs and values passed on to the very young, do we risk raising the next generation of racists?  That seems to be the foundation of a program aimed at adults in charge of nursery schools in the UK.  Not only should they be aware of outright racist acts and language, they need to be on the wary for kids who say "yuk" to spicy ethnic food.

Rewarding Behavior Which Ought To Occur In The First Place

If you're under a certain age in this country, you're supposed to be in school during the school year. That's, of course, unless you have a reasonable excuse, like sickness or a death in the family. The goal is a perfect attendance record. But this is 21st century America and attendance in public schools, particularly in large urban areas, tends to be less than perfect. The question is how to address this problem. The answer for the Chicago Public School (CPS) system is to offer rewards. But, the most recent reward for attendance has turned a few heads and has people wondering "is this anyway to get kids to go to school?"

Canadian Judge Gets Kid Out Of Time Out

One can read this story and ask what's next? Will there be court orders to eat your vegetables? Or, perhaps, they'll assert the right not to clean one's room? Whatever the future holds, the present got just a little more bizarre up in Canada as a judge overturned a father's decision to not allow his child to go on a school field trip.
