For Timothy Garon, the marijuana use was absolutely necessary. Ever since he was diagnosed with Hepatitis C and his liver began failing, his daily usage enabled him to battle nausea and abdominal pain and stimulate his appetite. Beyond that, it was entirely legal as Washington is one of those states with a law saying a doctor can prescribe its use for exactly the purposes that Garon put it to. Perversely, the thing that made life bearable for the 56-year-old Seattle musician during his wait for a transplant also sealed his fate. Tim Garon is dead today because a medical committee at the hospital, which could have performed the liver transplant, kept his name off the transplant list. Their reason - Tim Garon was a drug user.

The body count for serial killers is impressive. Ted Bundy is believed responsible for 35 victims. John Wayne Gacy ran up a total of 33 victims. Gary Ridgway eventually pleaded guilty to 48 murders. A couple of things connect these prolific killers: an outward appearance of normality and they managed to accomplish much of their work before anyone suspected there was a serial murderer at work. Now, there's the possibility of another monster quietly and efficiently killing as many as 40 victims thus far.

Animal Cruelty Or Art?

Artists like to press the artistic envelope to see if they can emerge with a new definition of art. In doing so, artists will provoke and occasionally outrage us. But, if they're doing their job right, they are always asking us to question our preconceived notions of what art is. A pitfall for artists out on the envelope's edge is that they will emerge into areas which shock and outrage a public which believes isn't art. Such is the case of artist Guillermo Vargas and what he calls art and what others call animal cruelty.

To What Standard Of Responsibility Should Parents Be Held?

The law says a person should be held responsible for his or her own actions. But, in cases where the actor is a juvenile, some states have passed parental responsibility laws. Most of these laws involve fining or charging parents the cost of adjudicating their children's cases. Recently, we discussed new laws visiting criminal penalties on parents who fail to control their wayward children. But, do you charge a parent with a crime commensurate with what you charge their child with? Such a question is being answered in the affirmative in Florida as authorities have charged a parent with second degree manslaughter for a car crash her son caused.

According to Debra Campanile, losing Misty, her canine companion of some 13 years, "was devastating." The Massachusetts resident said Misty was part of her family and not just a pet. She wants Massachusetts to formally recognize how deeply pet owners feel about the loss of their pets. This is why is fervently pushing for some legislation which would allow pet owners to recover civil damages whenever a pet dies because of other than old age. When Campanile says whenever, she means whenever. Under the law she is seeking, humans could be financially liable for pain and suffering due to the loss of a pet - whether that loss came about due to animal abuse, reckless driving, or a mistake made by the veterinarian.

Consider tale of Skip Legault, poster boy for New York's anti-smoking posters and commercials. Since he started smoking at age 8, he has had two heart attacks, strokes, surgeries, and at least seven blood clots, one of which caused gangrene and amputation of his right lower leg.

There is a new trend in Korea called "Well-dying" that consists of perfectly normal (physically, at least) college students reading their wills and then being nailed into coffins and symbolically buried.

The mission of the San Francisco Zoo is "to connect people with wildlife, inspire caring for nature and advance conservation action." Three zoo patrons on Christmas Day were connected with wildlife, but not in a way anyone would have wanted to see happen. One of the zoo's largest cats managed to get out of its enclosure and, once the carnage ended the final body count was two dead (one tiger, one human) and two injured.

It seemed to be not so much a question of if, but when. The date for when became fixed as December 27th, 2007 as Benazir Bhutto was pronounced dead, victim of an assassination. She had just left a political rally in the city of Rawalpindi when she was shot by an assassin who blew himself up. At least 19 others, mostly members of Bhutto's Pakistan Peoples Party, also lost their lives in the blast. Her death, coming less than two weeks before the country's parliamentary elections, promises to shorten the fuse on the powder keg known as Pakistan.

Bill Fountain was sure he had a raccoon problem at his Lexington, Kentucky home. He put out a trap as he was tired of the putative pest raiding his trash can. One morning he finds a critter inside the trap. Said critter jumped out at him. Fearing for his life, Fountain drowned the critter in a barrel filled with water. Turns out he was tragically mistaken and now he's facing criminal charges of animal cruelty.
