In a food stamp stampede that some officials say demonstrates how bad the food crisis is for some, dozens of people were trampled outside Milwaukee's main welfare office Monday when the doors opened. Many of the estimated 3,000 people waiting on line were there to claim benefits to get replacement food after sustaining damages in the recent storms.

Recipe For Mining Disaster: Mix Mining Nut And The New Brownie

The Crandall Canyon Mine was one of 32 coal mines in Utah operating with a proper permit.  Disaster struck suddenly two weeks ago as the mine collapsed, trapping six miners inside.  Operations quickly began in the hopes of rescuing the six.  These efforts suffered a setback ten days into the rescue as a seismic bump resulted in the rescue party suffering three deaths and six injuries.  Finally, whatever faint hopes of rescuing the six evaporated as mine owner Robert Murray told families of the trapped miners their loved ones were probably dead and would never be recovered.

State Farm Insurance is one of the biggest insurance companies in the US.  It was founded in 1922 as a mutual auto insurer (meaning the company was owned by its policy holders) in Illinois.  It is now an enterprise providing all sorts of insurance -- including homeowners insurance -- and has branched out into the world of financial services.  It earns over (US)$56 billion annually by servicing 71.6 million policies through close to 17,000 agents backed up by over 79,000 employees.  But, in 2005 an ill wind named Katrina blew into State Farm's path and, as a result, it looks like Mississippi is declaring war on State Farm.
