Current estimates show 20 percent of Americans with a smoking habit. They also show that smoking is related to 440,000 deaths in the US annually, adding about (US)$150 billion to the nation's healthcare cost each year. Over the years, society has struggled to kick the habit, throwing a succession of lawsuits, increasingly restrictive smoking laws and the levying of increasingly onerous taxes on packs of cigarettes. Now, the anti-smoking forces in the US might have rounded the turn and headed into the home stretch in an attempt to ban cigarettes. Congress has passed a law which effectively identifies tobacco as a drug and America's First Smoker, President Barack Obama, promises to sign it into law.
