Things got very tense for pharmacy technician Babette Perry back on Christmas Eve of 2007. She was on duty at the Hampton Behavioral Health Center in Mount Holly, New Jersey when a masked gunman confronted Perry demanding Oxycontin while claiming he held a coworker hostage in another room. Throughout the incident, Perry had no doubts her life (and that of her coworker) were in jeopardy. When she tried to call for police, her phone wasn't working. After the incident was over, imagine Perry's surprise to find out there would not be a police investigation. Imagine her shock at finding out the "holdup" was a security drill staged by her employer. Imagine how much money Perry wants her employer to pay her for the post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) she claims the drill caused.

The War Against Drugs is a long-lasting conflict. The US has been battling drugs, of one variety or other, since the earliest part of the 20th century. The actual term was first coined by President Richard Nixon in 1969. Forty years on, we're no closer to winning this war than we ever were and it's been waged by one administration after the other at a frightful cost in terms of dollars spent and lives ruined or lost. Although the current Drug War Czar has publicly called for an end to calling it the War on Drugs, preferring to focus on treatment above punishment, some police agencies haven't gotten the memo yet. Case in point are the drug warriors belonging to two neighboring North Carolina police agencies. They did manage to bust a pot smoking degenerate trying to buy weed from a gang of marijuana desperados. Problem being that the buyers and sellers were both undercover cops.

You won't have to worry about running into surgical technician Kristen Parker in the operating room anytime soon. But, upwards of 5,700 patients who were operated on in two Denver hospitals are worried - and they should be very worried. Because the 26-year-old Parker is facing three federal drug charges involving the swapping of her used needles filled with saline solution for needles from her employer filled with heavy-duty narcotics. Oh yeah, and Parker is diagnosed with Hepatitis-C, both employers knew this fact, and the 5,700 potential victims want to know how this was allowed to happen and why it took the hospitals so long to do something about it.

The federal government recently declared it would cease busting those who produce and distribute medicinal pot. But, could it be that what's good for the body might also be good for the soul? What about an illegal drug that's the heart of a religion? Shouldn't there be some part of the US Constitution that says the government has no right to harsh the buzz of religious folks? Oh right, there is - it's called the First Amendment and, as amplified by a subsequent US law, it led a federal judge to give the okay for church members to ingest their holy hallucinatory brew.

Joseph Shepard could be a candidate for poster child for the Sixth Amendment Society, should such a society ever be formed. He's been sitting in a jail cell in Jennings, Missouri waiting to have his drug case resolved in court. He's been waiting for almost two years, most of it spent in his cell 23 hours out of each 24 hour day. He's been forgotten by the system.

To hear the medical schools talk about it, they are training doctors who will practice medicine with their patients' best health in mind. There are those who say one of the things many doctors learn early in their careers is that pharmaceutical companies can be quite helpful to them. What they'll find is that pharamaceutical company reps are a wondrous source of money, gifts and free drug samples. There is a group that believes many doctors learn these things right when they're learning to become doctors - at medical school. They also believe the first steps in correcting the situation has to be taken at the medical schools. According to the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), it's about time to take stock of just what the medical schools are doing about this situation. Which is what it did and the initial results are quite disturbing.

America's drug warriors never seem to tire in their quest to have something to get their bowels in an uproar. It's not enough that they seem intent on creating another "illegal drug" they can prosecute. Although, they might have an argument here - the use of Salvia divinorum does produce hallucinations (although not addictions). But our drug warriors are now onto another insidious drug-related threat to America. This substance doesn't produce highs, lows, or much of anything beyond potential tooth decay. No, the main thing about this substance is that the damned pot suckers taste just like weed.

Britain's Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, announced the UK is reclassifying cannabis. It is currently a Class C drug and, in the future, it will be classified a Class B drug. The difference is that possession of a Class C drug tops out at two years behind bars, while getting caught with a Class B drug could cost you five years of your life. Smith said the government's decision, which still requires parliamentary approval, is part of a "relentless effort" to protect the nation's young people.

Sneakers on telephone wires. Like white dog poop from the '70s they are one of those oft-seen, rarely documented phenomenons of every day life. How did they get there? Why did they get there? Possibly most importantly, who put them there?
