In Alaska The Election Stinks on Ice

The year was 2008. Americans were finally coming to the day of reckoning in the most anticipated election in decades. Voter registration and turnout were at an all time high and for Alaskans it was their time in the sun. Alaska's beloved Governor Sarah Palin was making history as the first woman to be the Republican candidate for Vice President. The US Senate's longest-serving Republican, Ted Stevens, was in a tight race for re-election despite having just been convicted of seven felonies. Yet for some reason Alaska's voter turnout was only 54.9%, the second lowest in state history for a Presidential election and a good 12 points below average. Something stinks here and it's not salmon.

Senator Obama (D-IL) may have the support of his home state, but his immediate neighbors are kind of angry at him. Why? Because their street has been turned into an armed camp for the past several months, and they are being forced to pay for it.

The voting's over in Russia and the expected outcome was announced.  Dimitry Medvedev garnered 70 percent of the vote and will replace Vladimir Putin as president in May.  Very few claims of voting irregularities were heard.  While Putin and Medvedev turned on the effusiveness to celebrate Russian democracy much of the world hoped that a new face in the Kremlin might mean more cordial relations.

A Shorter Fuse For Pakistan As Bhutto Is Assassinated?

MayorBob.

Posted to Politics on Thu Dec 27, 2007 at 02:05:21 PM EST (promoted by 1fastdog). RSS.

It seemed to be not so much a question of if, but when.  The date for when became fixed as December 27th, 2007 as Benazir Bhutto was pronounced dead, victim of an assassination.  She had just left a political rally in the city of Rawalpindi when she was shot by an assassin who blew himself up.  At least 19 others, mostly members of Bhutto's Pakistan Peoples Party, also lost their lives in the blast.  Her death, coming less than two weeks before the country's parliamentary elections, promises to shorten the fuse on the powder keg known as Pakistan.
