When does the Top 40 hit list become torture?

What do songs by the Bee Gees, Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen, Dr. Dre, James Taylor, Queen, Rage against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Sesame street theme all have in common? Their repetitive and loud usage was admittedly (pdf) used, some would say as torture, on prisoners at the military facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Now that the above songs have been linked to Gitmo operations by government admission or guard/prisoner testimony other bands are demanding that the US inform them if their acts were used during the interrogation process.

Tunes, baby! The Oughts are almost over, which means it is time to make long boring lists of pop cultural crap produced during the last decade. Today's list is The 200 Best Albums of the 2000's, as chosen by Pitchfork magazine.

What better way to kick off the Hudson River Quadricentennial Celebration and 3rd Annual ChowderFest than by spending an evening watching Eddie "The Money Man" Money?

Tonight my favorite Japanese band, SGT. [Myspace] will be playing at O-Nest in Shibuya, Tokyo. Sadly I can't make it there, but I thought I might take this chance to make a short tribute to them here in case there are any TNTers interested in Japanese post-rock/indie/emo/jazz (not my description, theirs).

The so-called "Best bar band in America" has just released a live album featuring a performance from The Metro in Chicago during their breakout year of 2007. A companion DVD documenting their rise from small, intimate clubs to ever larger venues accompanies the live disc. Also included are a link to five bonus tracks, including three originally contained on a limited edition version of last year's Stay Positive

Anvil: 35 Years and Still Rocking!

The year was 1985 and Anvil were the hottest band on the Canadian metal scene. They toured Europe, America and Japan and played to festival crowds at Monsters of Rock. They counted among their fans the members of Metallica, Motorhead, Guns n' Roses, Slayer and Pantera. Their rock anthem Metal on Metal was a crowd-pleaser that never failed to get heads banging and Anvil were poised for stardom. It never happened, but here's the twist: they never gave up. 35 years later, Anvil are still together, still touring, and still chasing their rock and roll dreams.

The Steepwater Band - Grace And Melody [Review]

The best blues-based, neo-classic-rock-band-you've-never-heard-of released a gem of an album last year. Grace And Melody sees The Steepwater Band paying homage to their influences and also staying true to their own sound, while totally destroying the notion that classic rock can't sound fresh in the '00s. These guys don't just rock, they, as the kids so often say, Rawk!

Sometimes it takes a while to discover musical gems. Maybe they're side projects of artists you haven't gotten around to hearing, or they're just not the big attention-getters of the year from standard reviewers or the hipeoisie. Whatever the reason, you're left with this wonderful release which doesn't really qualify as "new" for the sake of the end-of-year's listmania, but you feel should get attention anyway. I'm going to call this a "Late to the Party" review.

With that in mind, let me present the inaugural LttP artist: Katherine Whalen, and her 2006 release Dirty Little Secret.

It's one of the highest rated albums of the year and is getting massive love from all quarters, but does it live up to all the hype?
