Harry Reid's Negro Problem

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is experiencing an unlikely political crisis - attacks on him by the Republican party for making racist remarks.  During the 2008 presidential campaign, Reid apparently called Obama "light skinned" and stated that he talked "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.''  Obama has already issued a statement saying that he discussed the matter with Reid and that he considers the issue closed.

Update: Racist Swim Club Pulls The Plug

We discussed the tempest in a swimming pool known as the Valley Swim Club back in July when it broke out.  Since then the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (HRC) said, yup, Valley Swim Club certainly did practice some racism there.  That cost the club at least a fine of (US)$50,000.  Not satisfied with the outcome of being vindicated by the HRC plus all the publicity showered on it and a celebrity-funded getaway to DisneyWorld for all the kids, the Creative Steps Daycare decided to pursue further civil action against the club.  Surprise, surprise, the club, composed of mostly middle class white members decided to call it quits by filing for bankruptcy.

Militias: The best thing since sliced bread, or a paranoid group that will eat your children?

CNN recently embedded a reporter [video] with the Michigan Militia for some reason. He followed the group on one of their weekend maneuvers and asked tough and totally non-inflammatory questions.

When is a hate crime not a hate crime?

Brian Milligan, 18, was beaten last month by a gang of 10-15 wielding pieces of concrete. The assault, which occurred in Milligan's neighborhood on a crowded street at 10pm with few witnesses, lead to police following a bloody trail and finding him at home with a fractured skull, brain injuries, no sense of smell, amnesia and other problems that put him in the trauma center for days. It has now become clear Milligan (who is white) was beaten for daring to date a local black woman. Yet weeks later there are still no suspects in the case, few witnesses, no arrests, and the police have not even called it a hate crime. As the situation gets more attention nationwide commentators are beginning to wonder why there have been no marches by civil rights leaders, civil disobedience, protests or the press that a gang assault of 15 whites beating a black man would have garnered.

There Was Something In The Water And It Wasn't Just The Chlorine

It seemed like a lovely idea at the time.  A suburban Philadelphia swim club reaches out to a city day camp to afford the primarily black kids the opportunity to swim and frolic the summer away.  Not only would it help fill the suburban swim club's coffers with memberships that had fallen off due to the economy but it would be an affirmation that at least one small piece of suburbia was moving past color as an issue.  Alas and alack, something got into the water beyond the 60 or so black and Hispanic kids from city.  At least, that's the way it appears to day camp and others as the idea lasted a total of one day as the city kids were asked not to return and people are shouting racism.

Please Don't Remember Those Dead Soldiers

On Memorial Day, President Barack Obama will place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery.  In doing so Obama, like every president since William G. Harding, pays homage to those Americans who have given their lives in the service of their country.  What is less well known is that another wreath is laid elsewhere on Memorial Day at Arlington.  This one is sent by the president to the Confederate Memorial.  But, like so much else having to do with the Civil War, that simple act of remembering fallen Confederates is generating another controversy.  A group of scholars are urging that Obama "break this chain of racism" by not sending that wreath.

Disney's Equal Opportunity Outrage

Walt Disney Studio figures its scheduled Christmas release of the animated film The Princess and the Frog is significant on a number of counts.  It's a return to 2D animation for the studio and it adds another princess to the pantheon of Disney heroines to join others like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, and Pocahantas.  Plus, just in time for the first black First Lady in American history, the film will feature the first black Disney princess.  According to Disney, this sort of breakthrough should be celebrated.  Yet, according to any number of critics, this sort of breakthrough is demeaning and racist.

There are some ideas which seem good in concept but suck big time in reality.  So it was for a class in a middle school in Kansas.  A language arts teacher thought one way to get the kids engaged in the boring, dry, old topic of historical research was to have them design a board game around an historical event.  Things went south for the teacher and the school as the product of the class project was displayed during a school open house.  Because a black couple and the local NAACP would like to know what was in the head of whomever who encouraged the Ku Klux Klan Game.

There Will Be No Barack Obama At This White House

Bruno Serato is the owner of the White House restaurant in Anaheim, California.  Even high end eateries built into 100-year-old historical landmarks can occasionally use an additional gimmick.  Serato's gimmick is booking dinners into rooms named after residents of that other White House.  Imagine Serato's excitement at being able to name another room after the man who just took the oath of office in Washington, DC.  Imagine his chagrin as his most loyal clientele responded by saying they'll never take another meal at his establishment again.

You're Never Too Young To Be A Racist.

"Racism is not born in you; it happens after you're born" is the opening lyric of the song "You Have To Be Carefully Taught" from the Broadway musical South Pacific.  Point being that there is no such thing as a born racist, just babies born into a world filled with parents, teachers and significant others who shape, mold and impose their racist views on these children as they grow older.  But, how does it begin and what can be done to combat it?  If you wait too long to counter racist beliefs and values passed on to the very young, do we risk raising the next generation of racists?  That seems to be the foundation of a program aimed at adults in charge of nursery schools in the UK.  Not only should they be aware of outright racist acts and language, they need to be on the wary for kids who say "yuk" to spicy ethnic food.

Karina Acosta's school year at high school in Roswell, New Mexico ended abruptly in December.  That's when she was detained by a Roswell police officer for blocking a fire lane to drop off another child at a middle school.  Expelled from school is a mighty harsh penalty to pay for a minor traffic violation, you might say.
