In a war played out in the media, a father is fighting a restraining order against taking his daughter to church. While it's couched in terms of religious freedom, the real story is a bit more complicated.

When is a hate crime not a hate crime?

Brian Milligan, 18, was beaten last month by a gang of 10-15 wielding pieces of concrete. The assault, which occurred in Milligan's neighborhood on a crowded street at 10pm with few witnesses, lead to police following a bloody trail and finding him at home with a fractured skull, brain injuries, no sense of smell, amnesia and other problems that put him in the trauma center for days. It has now become clear Milligan (who is white) was beaten for daring to date a local black woman. Yet weeks later there are still no suspects in the case, few witnesses, no arrests, and the police have not even called it a hate crime. As the situation gets more attention nationwide commentators are beginning to wonder why there have been no marches by civil rights leaders, civil disobedience, protests or the press that a gang assault of 15 whites beating a black man would have garnered.

A Michigan appeals court has overturned the 10 year prison sentence of a minister sent up the river for violating his probation. In June 2008 Rev. Edward Pickney, already on probation for election fraud, published an angry newspaper article in which he referred to a judge as dumb, racist and corrupt. Another judge convicted him of a probation violation and sent him to prison for 3 to 10 years, where he remained until the recent ruling.

There's a book battle brewing down in Texas. In Frisco, Texas to be exact. That's where school authorities are wrestling with a group that wants to give away some literature. No, the Frisco school people aren't on an anti-literacy kick. The thing is the book in question is the Holy Bible and whether to passively leave them out for the kids to pick up or to proactively hand them out is becoming an issue.

Daniel Hauser, 13, from Sleepy Eye, MN, has Hodgkin's lymphoma or what physicians consider one of the most treatable forms of cancer. One might expect this to make the local papers. Unfortunately due to the parents belief in natural medicine and refusal to treat their child according to standard practice they find themselves defending against accusations of child negligence and arguing to the courts that the state does not have the right to force their child to receive chemotherapy.

The federal government recently declared it would cease busting those who produce and distribute medicinal pot. But, could it be that what's good for the body might also be good for the soul? What about an illegal drug that's the heart of a religion? Shouldn't there be some part of the US Constitution that says the government has no right to harsh the buzz of religious folks? Oh right, there is - it's called the First Amendment and, as amplified by a subsequent US law, it led a federal judge to give the okay for church members to ingest their holy hallucinatory brew.

Barack Obama's latest effort to reach out to his adversaries was to announce that he will speak at Notre Dame's commencement. This one looks likely to blow up in his face as over 100,000 Catholic religious leaders, alumni, and pro-life activists have protested against his plans. Patrick Reilly, President of Cardinal Newman Society, called Obama's selection "the last straw" and launched notredamescandal.com to collect signatures on petitions opposing Obama's presence at Notre Dame. He has been collecting over 1,000 anti-Obama petition signatures every 15 minutes.
