What better way to kick off the Hudson River Quadricentennial Celebration and 3rd Annual ChowderFest than by spending an evening watching Eddie "The Money Man" Money?

Tonight my favorite Japanese band, SGT. [Myspace] will be playing at O-Nest in Shibuya, Tokyo. Sadly I can't make it there, but I thought I might take this chance to make a short tribute to them here in case there are any TNTers interested in Japanese post-rock/indie/emo/jazz (not my description, theirs).

The so-called "Best bar band in America" has just released a live album featuring a performance from The Metro in Chicago during their breakout year of 2007. A companion DVD documenting their rise from small, intimate clubs to ever larger venues accompanies the live disc. Also included are a link to five bonus tracks, including three originally contained on a limited edition version of last year's Stay Positive

Just In Time for Star Trek: Romulan Ale

One has to wonder why no one thought of this before: brew and sell Romulan Ale. For the uninitiated, Romulan Ale is a beverage from the Star Trek canon. I quote the official Star Trek wiki, Memory Alpha:

Romulan ale is a highly intoxicating alcoholic beverage of Romulan origin with a characteristic blue color (this can range from a pale sky blue to a dark midnight blue, depending on the "vintage"). It takes a while to ferment and is also used for medicinal purposes.

Now, thanks to the brewmasters at Cerveceria La Constancia S.A. of El Salvador, you too can sample the beer that's banned across the Alpha Quadrant, a beer so strong that even Klingons fear it's mighty wrath, a beer that's...blue.

The Steepwater Band - Grace And Melody [Review]

The best blues-based, neo-classic-rock-band-you've-never-heard-of released a gem of an album last year. Grace And Melody sees The Steepwater Band paying homage to their influences and also staying true to their own sound, while totally destroying the notion that classic rock can't sound fresh in the '00s. These guys don't just rock, they, as the kids so often say, Rawk!

Sometimes it takes a while to discover musical gems. Maybe they're side projects of artists you haven't gotten around to hearing, or they're just not the big attention-getters of the year from standard reviewers or the hipeoisie. Whatever the reason, you're left with this wonderful release which doesn't really qualify as "new" for the sake of the end-of-year's listmania, but you feel should get attention anyway. I'm going to call this a "Late to the Party" review.

With that in mind, let me present the inaugural LttP artist: Katherine Whalen, and her 2006 release Dirty Little Secret.

One of 2008's most hyped and blogged about bands released an album that grabbed an 87% rating at metacritic, topped a lot of year-end lists, and helped  garner a musical spot on SNL a week ago. Does it live up to all of the glowing attention?

They'rrrrrrrrrre back!
After an 8-year hiatus, the the venerable rockers from Down Under are back with a #1 album. How's it sound? Well, clench your fists and start pumpin' or grab your air guitar and start jumpin', 'cuz it's that kind of album.
Here's the video for Rock N Roll Train.
