In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the US space program, NASA and the Discovery Channel recently released a new 6 part documentary chronicling the history of American space flight, from the early Mercury missions right up to the present. The documentary revisits many iconic images, but also contains much footage from the NASA archives that is being shown for the first time.

A recently concluded Norwegian study has determined that premature babies are significantly more likely than their full term brethren to develop health complications later in life. They were substantially more likely to die during later childhood, and also were much more frequently found to be infertile when they later tried to have children themselves.

On 9 October 1968, twin girls were born in New York and put up for adoption. As part of some study being conducted by "a leading US child psychologist with the co-operation of prestigious New York adoption agency Louise Wise Services ... to discover how identical twins would react to being raised in different family backgrounds", they were placed in separate families and never told about one another.

As has happened many times in the past, the Bush administration is coming under fire for stifling science in the name of political expediency. This time it's former Surgeon General, Richard Carmona:
"Anything that doesn't fit into the political appointees' ideological, theological or political agenda is often ignored, marginalized or simply buried," he said. "The problem with this approach is that in public health, as in a democracy, there is nothing worse than ignoring science or marginalizing the voice of science for reasons driven by changing political winds."

Most animal experts strongly suggest that, if you're not thinking about breeding your pet, the responsible thing to do is to have it spayed or neutered. Most responsible pet owners agree and will have the necessary operation performed soon after they buy their pet. But some animal owners find it cruel and barbaric to have Spot's testicles removed. For them, there's a new approach to neutering - an approach which allows the animal to keep all of his original equipment and still protects against overbreeding among dogs. But, it's a method which has any number of veterinarians uncertain about its efficacy.
