When a teenager commits suicide you might be inclined to call it tragic. Tragedy becomes theatre when others are invited to watch as it happens. Theatre becomes horror show when those watching egg the suicide victim on to his death. That's sort of the arch of this story as people are scratching their heads wondering what was up with Abraham Biggs, whose suicide was carried via live, streaming video over the internet.

Earlier this year, a New York judge ruled that NBC could be sued (pdf doc). What got the network in such hot water was the heavy-handed way they may have caused the suicide of someone caught up in Dateline's "To Catch A Predator" show. Now a second judge, this one in Florida, brought the gavel down on another media circus run with deadly results.

When law enforcement agencies announced that Edward "Eddie" Davidson, aka The Spam King, had escaped from prison, it seemed like another foolish move on the part of Davidson. After all, he only had to serve out his 21 months in a federal medium security prison and then he could get on with his life. Thus by fleeing custody from such a light sentence, essentially insuring a much longer stay once he was apprehended, Davidson seemed to be saying there was more going on here. How much may have been going on was revealed when authorities searching Davidson's old home found the bodies of Davidson, his wife and three-year-old daughter.

Dolphins, underwater mammals closely related to whales and porpoises, have been acting strangely recently. Actually, they've been acting suicidal, from the looks of a number of incidents. Last year, there was a case of two separate groups of dolphins (totaling 152) which beached themselves in Iran. Now, with the recent beaching of 26 dolphins in Cornwall, England people are beginning to ask why dolphins would want to commit suicide?

Suicide is the second leading cause of deaths of college students and is nearing "epidemic proportions." (pdf doc) In light of the increasing body counts, many schools are slowly coming to grips with the problem and beginning to set up programs aimed at identifying potential suicides in order to get them help before they make an attempt on their lives. But, what to do with those who try to do away with themselves and fail? Should they be kicked out of school or stigmatized while on campus? The legislators of at least one state - Virginia - are answering those questions with a very firm no.

On 11/1 both sides in a court case announced they had reached a settlement deal. What made this case noteworthy is what some view as outrageous actions taken by the defendant(s) that instigated the lawsuit. The case dealt with a George Washington University sophomore who had been barred from campus, sent orders of suspension, and threatened with expulsion for violating the school code of conduct. His crime? Voluntarily seeking help for depression.
