At a press conference in Barcelona on Monday, European fertility scientists announced a plan to bring cheap in-vitro fertilization procedures to Africa. The procedure, which has in the past been successfully used on farm animals, runs about $200. Current "best practices" human IVF procedures cost up to $10,000 in the West.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the US space program, NASA and the Discovery Channel recently released a new 6 part documentary chronicling the history of American space flight, from the early Mercury missions right up to the present. The documentary revisits many iconic images, but also contains much footage from the NASA archives that is being shown for the first time.

The last week has seen major new releases from two of the "big big four" web browsers. Firefox 3 was released Tuesday, June 17th, while Opera 9.5 was released last Thursday, June 12th (both have been released in beta form for a number of months).

Same Sex Is The State Of Marriage In The State Of California

California's Supreme Court has ruled that a voter-approved referendum banning homosexual marriage was unconstitutional, setting the stage for its complete legalization in the most populous US state. The ruling came even though California already allows gay couples to enter into civil unions which, under the law, had all the same rights, privileges, and obligations of heterosexual marriage.

A recently concluded Norwegian study has determined that premature babies are significantly more likely than their full term brethren to develop health complications later in life. They were substantially more likely to die during later childhood, and also were much more frequently found to be infertile when they later tried to have children themselves.

A new report by the trustees for Medicare and Social Security suggests that current spending rates will drive the two large entitlement programs to insolvency within the next few decades. Medicare is expected to go bust first - by 2019 - but Social Security will follow soon after and run out of funds sometime around 2041.
