It has been my entire lifetime.  Starbucks is good, but getting too pricey.   McDonalds coffee has always been a favorite of mine, but it's no longer cheap anymore as well.

We're living in an era of rocketing fuel costs, rising grocery costs, and taxes.

My Granddad  used to talk of pork chops (early 1900's) costing $0.05/lb.  Well, no longer.

Anyone remember "Service Stations"?

At one time, you could go to a Service Station (some call them call them "gas stations", "petrol pumps", all depends where you live).  This was back when gasoline cost ~30-cents/gallon.  A strapping young lad would come out, fill your tank, check your oil, clean the windshield, and check the air in your tires.

Black & White.  Yin & Yang.

For whatever reason, salt & pepper have become the almost-universal accompaniment on just about every dining room table and restaurant I've ever seen.  Indeed, I have salt and pepper shakers on my own table.  People even collect  the things.

Yes, I know it's the brunt of many jokes, like Monty Python's Flying Circus, and the word has taken on an evil connotation for junk email.  Why Spam was singled out rather than Baloney is beyond me.

I like recipes, and have made that entirely clear on this forum.  Here's my next experiment:

No, I'm not talking Hiroshima here, I'm talking about in the kitchen.  Microwave ovens have been around since the late 1960's, IIRC, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microwave_oven).  My first one was an Amana Radarange, and when it finally gave up the ghost, it was ~20 years old.

...Or is it?

There's only about a bazillion ways to make them.  Cheapy-Iceberg lettuce, Romaine lettuce, Arugula, water-cress, Boston-bib lettuce, oak-leaf lettuce... the list goes on and on.

Small yard tools, that is.  Not cooking.

I used to be a big fan of two-stroke outdoor gizmos, but one-by-one, I'm getting rid of all of them.

Quite possibly the finest food that mankind ever conjured up.  For cheese was one way of preserving milk, along with yogurt.

Conventional mortgage, rent, lease?

I once almost got sucked up in a land contract a long time ago.  Upon reading the contract closely, just painting a wall could have got me thrown out on my ass, not to mention having to pay back taxes and property liens.

Television - the medium that everyone loves to hate... and loves

I was a product of the '50s, when television was just becoming popular.  All we had then was Black & White, but without, I'd never have seen the Zapruder film of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the wonder of the first  lunar landing in 1969.  Later on came color TV, and with it the horrors of the Vietnam War, the god-awful  vision of 9/11/01, and countless other news events.
